Bishops land eight on coaches' all-state soccer teams

The Bishop England boys' and girls' soccer teams landed a combined eight players on the S.C. Coaches Association's all-state teams, while Academic Magnet landed seven.

Bishop England boys earning Class AA all-state include Kyle Smith, Arthur Holtzclaw, Matthew Kisabeth, Phillip Riccaiardone and Ryan Sellers.

Bishop England girls landing on the Class AA-A team include Jessica Kandl, Katherine Rooney and Sara Wilson.

Academic Magnet had three girls earn all-state at the Class AA-A level: Michela Blain, Loring Ward and Siara Wilson. In boys' Class A, Academic Magnet landed four players on the team: Nick Ballard, Erik Cobb, Dylan Dempsey and Gavin Wright.

Wando's David Newton, the Gatorade state player of the year, heads up the boys' Class AAAA team. James Island had two selections: Zach Volousky and David Getsinger.

Eight local athletes made the girls' Class AAAA team with West Ashley leading the way with three selections: Julie Bolt, Alechia Brothers and Danielle Jordan. Also making the team are Sara Catenacii and Lindsay Naramore of Wando, Lisa Frawley and Chelsea Terry of James Island, and Amanda Lear of Fort Dorchester.

The association will name the North-South all-star squads next weekend.

THE END IS NEAR

The end is near. The end of the high school season, that is.

On Saturday, the High School League crowned team champions in track and field and boys' tennis.

The state baseball and softball championships begin Monday and should conclude by this weekend.

Here is the remainder of the schedule:

Soccer will play this weekend at Stone Stadium in Columbia. Friday: Class AA-A girls, 3 p.m.; Class AAA girls, 5 p.m.; Class AAAA girls, 7 p.m. Saturday at Stone Stadium: Class A boys, 11:30 a.m.; Class AA boys, 2 p.m.; Class AAA boys, 4:30 p.m.; Class AAAA boys, 7 p.m.

Boys' individual tennis championships will be held Friday and Saturday at the Caughman Road Tennis Center in Columbia.

In boys' golf, Class AA will be held Monday and Tuesday at the Barnwell Country Club.

The Class AAA will be held Monday and Tuesday at Myrtle Beach National. Class AAAA will be contested May 16-17 at Furman.

HARBER TO MARS HILL

Goose Creek shortstop Ashley Harber has signed a softball scholarship with Mars Hill.

She was a four-year starter and a team captain this spring. She batted .368 with 26 RBIs.

MACK TO SEWANEE

Acacia Mack, a two-time SCISA all-state basketball selection for the Porter-Gaud Cyclones, has signed with Sewanee.

Mack was a two-year starter who played in this year's South Carolina vs. Georgia independent schools challenge. She averaged 10 points and 5.3 rebounds per game.
